Stonehenge 2000 Summer Solstice Celebrations
We suggest that over the summer solstice in the year 2000 :
1) Free access is allowed for ALL into the Stonehenge inner circle.
2) The A360 past the stones is closed to motor vehicles (special arrangements to
be provided for people unable to walk to the stones)
3) A free camping and parking area with water points, toilets and rubbish skips
is provided within safe child walking distance, one half mile, of Stonehenge.
Users of this area to take responsibility for clearing up after the
celebrations.
4) Stewarding for the event is provided by a neutral organization. (e.g.
volunteers )
These proposals if carried out would have costs comparable with the current
confrontational exclusion policy, would diffuse the potential for violence and
disorder by all sides and would allow the Millennial Stonehenge Summer Solstice
to be celebrated in a spirit of reconciliation rather than confrontation.
If the authorities continue with their current policy it will result in :
1) Another, larger, confrontation at Stonehenge increasing the alienation of all
involved.
2) Greatly increased numbers attempting to celebrate the solstice at Avebury,
stretching the tolerance of the villagers and their infrastructure even further.
