Yew
lovepoon carved by Nansi Hemming |
|
|
This Welsh lovespoon was carved from one piece of yew (Taxus baccata)
and then inlaid with a motif of bog oak. Lovespoons were traditionally
made by Welsh men for women they admired, thus demonstrating their
devotion and skill. Yew with its variations of rich colour is a
particularly beautiful wood. Bog oak is oak (Quercus petraea/robur) that
has been preserved by the anaerobic and acidic environment of a marsh. It
is a very hard wood to carve. Pieces many hundreds of years old are
occasionally ploughed up by farmers on reclaimed land.
